Migrate from VMware to OpenStack: A Safe, Proven Path to Modernization
VMware’s rising licensing costs and ecosystem uncertainty have pushed enterprises to evaluate alternative modernization paths. OpenStack provides an open, stable, and scalable platform—and VM2Cloud ensures your migration is seamless, structured, and low-risk.
Why Enterprises Are Leaving VMware
- Escalating per-core and subscription licensing costs
- Vendor-driven platform direction and reduced customer control
- Desire for predictable long-term TCO
- Interest in open, sovereign cloud environments
VM2Cloud Migration Framework
1. Discovery & Assessment
We analyze VM dependencies, storage layout, network mappings, and compliance needs.
2. Build Target OpenStack Cloud
HA controllers, compute clusters, Ceph storage, SDN, monitoring & automation.
3. Data & VM Migration
Block-level sync, network mapping, flavor creation, security group mapping, and phased cutover.
4. Validation & Optimization
Performance checks, failover testing, policy implementation, and governance configuration.
What Discovery Covers
Discovery for a move from VMware to OpenStack usually starts with an inventory of virtual machines and their CPU, memory and disk profiles. It records which machines depend on which others, so that systems that must move together can be grouped into the same wave. It also captures the storage layout, the networks and VLANs in use, and the guest operating systems, because these affect how each machine is converted. A migration blueprint typically sets out the waves, their order and the target design.
Mapping VMware Concepts to OpenStack
Most VMware constructs have an OpenStack counterpart, but few translate one to one:
- Virtual machine sizes map to OpenStack flavors.
- Port groups and VLANs map to Neutron networks and subnets.
- VM templates map to Glance images.
- Storage tiers, usually expressed in vSphere as datastores or storage policies, are offered as Cinder volume types.
- Firewall rules are rebuilt as security groups. Security groups hold only allow rules, so deny rules and rule order have to be redesigned rather than copied.
- Folders and resource pools have no exact equivalent. Projects with quotas are the usual way to separate teams, but quotas cap what a project can allocate and do not reproduce the shares and reservations of a resource pool.
vSphere HA and DRS also have no one-to-one counterpart, so the target design has to cover availability and workload placement in other ways.
How Workloads Move
There are two common ways to move a machine's disks. One is to shut the machine down, copy its disk images and convert them to a format OpenStack can boot. The other uses block-level synchronization: most of the data is copied while the source machine keeps running, and only the changes made since the last sync are copied at cutover. Either way, guest operating systems may need drivers or configuration changes to boot on a different hypervisor.
Planning Cutover in Waves
Migrating in waves limits the blast radius. A common pattern is to start with low-risk, non-production systems to prove the process, then move production applications grouped by dependency, with an agreed cutover window and a test plan for each wave.
What a Migration Needs From Your Side
- Access to the source environment and its documentation.
- Application owners who can sign off each wave.
- Confirmed maintenance windows for cutover.
- Application-level acceptance tests after each move.
After the Move
Validation continues once workloads are running on the new platform: performance is checked against what the applications saw before, failover is tested, and access policy and governance are put in place. Day-to-day operation of the cloud platform then sits with the managed service, while you remain responsible for what runs inside your instances.
