What a Private Cloud Means in Practice
A private cloud is cloud infrastructure used by a single organization. Teams still get the self-service experience people expect from public cloud: they create instances, networks and volumes through an API or a web console, within the projects and quotas set for them. The difference is who the platform serves and who sets the rules for it. Because the platform is built on OpenStack, the interfaces are the standard OpenStack APIs, so tools such as the openstack command line, Terraform and Ansible work without modification.
In OpenStack, every resource belongs to a project. Quotas cap how much compute, storage and network capacity each project can use, and roles assigned through Keystone decide what each user may do, so several teams can share one platform while each works within its own limits.
Who Runs What
For a private cloud hosted on VM2Cloud's infrastructure, the split of responsibility is explicit. VM2Cloud is responsible for the availability and security of the cloud itself: the hardware, the OpenStack services and the storage backend, including patching, upgrades, capacity and monitoring of the platform. You are responsible for security in the cloud: your workloads, operating system patching inside your instances, network policy through security groups, and your data.
Questions to Settle Before You Build
A private cloud is easier to size and operate when a few decisions are made early:
- Which workloads move first, and what do they need from compute, storage and network?
- How will tenants be organized into projects, and what quotas apply to each?
- Which storage tiers are needed, for example faster volumes for databases and standard volumes for general use?
- How will users sign in, and does identity need to connect to an existing directory?
