OpenStack Pricing & TCO: Understanding the Cost of a Modern Private Cloud
OpenStack offers cloud flexibility without the licensing burden of proprietary virtualization. VM2Cloud provides transparent OpenStack pricing aligned with your infrastructure, scale, and operational requirements.
OpenStack Cost Components
- Infrastructure hardware (compute, storage, network)
- OpenStack deployment & automation
- Managed cloud operations
- Ceph storage cluster costs
- Optional add-ons (multi-region, Kubernetes, GPU)
VM2Cloud Pricing Model
- One-time deployment fee
- Monthly managed service fee
- Optional enhancements & enterprise modules
What the Cost Depends On
No two OpenStack clouds are the same size or shape. Cost depends on your infrastructure, scale and operational requirements. What follows explains what moves the cost, so you can arrive at a conversation prepared and compare quotes on the same basis.
What Drives the Total Cost of Ownership
- Hardware: the number and type of compute hosts, the storage nodes and drives, and the network switching between them.
- Location: whether the platform is hosted on VM2Cloud's infrastructure or placed in your own data center, co-location or edge site.
- Storage design: the Ceph tiers you need, the protection scheme chosen, and how much usable capacity you need relative to raw capacity.
- Availability: highly available controllers and the number of regions or availability zones.
- Add-ons: container platforms, GPU compute and other enterprise modules.
- Operations: the day-two work of running the platform, such as patching, upgrades, monitoring and capacity management.
One-Time and Recurring Costs
The useful way to model the cost is over the life of the platform, not month by month. When you compare a managed platform with running a cloud yourself, count every cost component on both sides, include the staff time that in-house operations would need, and allow for running two environments side by side during any migration.
Questions Worth Asking Any Provider
- Which components and services are included in the monthly fee, and which are extra?
- What happens to the cost as you add capacity?
- What are the exit terms, and in what form can you take your data and workloads with you?
- Who is responsible for upgrades, and is that work included?
